My Week with Marilyn: Movie Summary


A creation from the director Simon Curtis and writer Adrian Hodges, My Week with Marilyn is a true story that portrays the making of the movie The Prince and the Showgirl. Starring actors Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Dougray Scott, Kenneth Branagh, Julia Ormond, Judie Dench, and Emma Watson. The film focuses on a week where Marilyn is shooting her movie while her husband, Arthur Miller, was away from England.

The movies had its world premiere on October 9, 2011, at the New York Festival, and was shown at Mill Valley Film Festival on the 11th. Later released in the rest of the United States and the United Kingdom in November. Michelle Williams won the Golden Globe Award for the Best Actress in Motion Picture for Comedy and Musical, and several nominations from the Academy Awards and British Academy Film Awards.

Movie Plot

After his graduation, Colin Clark travels to London to get a job at Laurence Olivier’s next production. Vivien Leigh, Olivier’s wife, encourages his husband to give Colin a job for his upcoming film The Prince and the Showgirl which start Marilyn Monroe. Colin’s task is to look for a place where the newlyweds, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, to stay in England.

The paparazzi knew about the arrival so they went at Heathrow to wait for Marilyn. She was with her husband, business partner Milton Greene, and acting coach Paula Strasberg. Marilyn was really uncomfortable around people so she had troubles with her lines and gets on the set late. Olivier gets angry every time this happens but the crew and other actors are in awe of Marilyn. Her co-actor Sybil Thorndike admires and defends her when she causes to hold the shoot.

Arthur later returns to the United States, leaving Marilyn with struggles and tears because of continuous arguments on the set. Colin became Marilyn’s knight in shining armor. They talk and hang out until Colin develops an infatuation with Marilyn. Milton and Lucy, a wardrobe assistant that likes him, ask him to stay away from Marilyn.

They refuse to hear the people around them and continue their secret getaways. Colin gave Marilyn a tour of the library of Windsor Castle, Eton College, and went skinny dipping in the River Thames. One night, Marilyn invites Colin the room and spend the night in each other’s arms. The following day, Marilyn felt pain and claims to have a miscarriage. After that, she tells Colin that Arthur is coming back and she wants to become a good wife. She asks him to stop and forget everything that happened. She then returns to the set and completes the movie. And before she leaves, Marilyn thanks Colin for his help, kiss him goodbye and left.
